Conventional Building

Conventional building refers to a structure built using traditional, on-site construction methods. Unlike Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEBs), which use factory-made components, conventional buildings are fabricated from scratch at the project location using raw materials like bricks, cement, sand, and hot-rolled steel.

Key Characteristics

  • On-Site Fabrication: Nearly all activities—including welding, cutting of steel, mixing concrete, and masonry—are performed directly at the construction site.
  • Materials: Relies heavily on RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete), clay bricks, timber, and standard hot-rolled I-sections for steel frames.
  • Design Process: Each project is typically designed from scratch by architects and engineers, allowing for highly complex and unique architectural geometries.

Advantages

  • Architectural Freedom: Better suited for complex, non-standard designs and high-rise structures where aesthetic finishes are a priority.
  • On-the-Fly Changes: Offers greater flexibility to make manual alterations or design adjustments during the construction phase.
  • Local Familiarity: Utilizes a readily available pool of skilled labour and materials that can be sourced locally in most urban areas.
  • Fire Safety: Conventional masonry and concrete structures often provide inherently high levels of fire resistance.

Limitations

  • Construction Speed: Significantly slower than PEBs; delivery often takes 20–26 weeks compared to 6–8 weeks for prefabricated systems.
  • Higher Costs: Increased on-site labour, material wastage, and longer timelines typically make these buildings 20–30% more expensive.
  • Structural Weight: Uses heavier hot-rolled sections and concrete, which requires a more substantial and costly foundation to support the extra load.
  • Sustainability: Generates more on-site waste and has a higher carbon footprint compared to lean, recyclable steel PEB methods.
